META said on Wednesday (local time) that it has blocked a “small” number of WhatsApp accounts linked to an Iranian hacking group that targeted officials associated with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
The fake WhatsApp accounts appear to have come from an Iranian threat group called APT42, Meta said in a blog post.
With less than 75 days to go before the November election, the company said its security team was able to identify APT42's involvement after analyzing suspicious messages that an unspecified number of users reported receiving from the fraudulent WhatsApp accounts.
The Trump campaign said earlier this month that foreign actors had breached its network and illegally obtained internal communications.
