- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Zest of 2 large oranges
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (from the zested oranges)
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
**For the Orange Syrup:**
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
**For the Orange Glaze:**
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
**Instructions:**
**For the Cake:**
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until it becomes light and fluffy, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Then, stir in the vanilla extract and the orange zest.
5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the orange juice and buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry mixture. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
6. Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven, so keep a close eye on it.
8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
**For the Orange Syrup:**
1. In a small saucepan, combine the 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Heat over low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
2. Once the cake has cooled, poke several holes in the top using a toothpick or fork. Drizzle the orange syrup over the cake, allowing it to soak in.
**For the Orange Glaze:**
1. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed orange juice. Adjust the consistency by adding more juice if needed.
2. Drizzle the orange glaze over the completely cooled cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
3. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
