Ever since I found out that Telegram handed over confidential user data to governments, I stopped using it. 
Yet, there are still many people who use it as if it offers "anonymity." 
Is there something about Telegram that I’m missing?

you're not missing out on anything good, unless you use it to communicate with potential customers en masse.

Telegram exposes your public IP in addition to the chat that is not properly encrypted.

Many people who have very low OSPEC use it, we do not recommend it.

We recommend educating users to use more private OSPEC apps like Session.

Telegram is simpler to use and more people are on it + there are usernames so also a market for ogu
But its not a good platform if you really care about privacy
for privacy get things like session or simpleX
but there are still ways to be secure on telegram
by buying a fake number and not logging in from your real ip...

I would say Session, but man so damn many people say that it has big vulnerabilities. I'm not sure what to use anymore.

You are not missing on anything..only thing is to mask yourself when online.
People were used to it..and its hard moving on something else.
