Are you new with this hobby and don't know where to start?
Well, I got good news and bad news for you.
Good news are that there are a lot of themes.
Bad news, same than previous statement.
So, I decided to write this as a little help so you can find an anime/manga that you consider suitable for your likes. Although I must say first that some of this haven't been watched/read by your server, so maybe you may ask for a second opinion on them. And yes, like a school work I will give the credits to the sources at the end, so you can take away the mouse from the -reputation button.
The basics:
Manga has categories, called demographic, to determine more-less which is the target audience by age.
Kodomo (less than 13 yo)
Shonen/Shounen (12 - 18 yo, boys)
Shojo/Shoujo (12 - 18 yo, girls)
Seinen (19 - 40+, men)
Jisei (19 - 40+, women)
Needles to say, boys also consume shojo/jisei and girls shounen/seinen, even when they are not the target audience.
And for both manga and anime we got the themes, also can be referred as genre. These are the tags that, well, tag the work with a certain or group of themes. Can't give a complete list because I don't know if even there's one out there, but for starters we can say it's something like this:
Slice of Life: Like a journal or diary, mostly like a story of young memories.
Mecha: Giant robots.
Harem: One boy with many girls after him.
Ecchi: Sexual jokes, fan-service, almost if not always accompanied with Harem.
Yaoi: Love between boys.
Yuri: Love between girls.
One of those tags may be the main over the others, depends of the story.
So, where do I start?
There's not a tier list nor an official tour to follow, mostly depends on you and your likes.
But you entered to this post to find something to start so, here are some options.
Mecha:
Harem/Ecchi:
Military:
Comedy:
And here are some honorific mentions that I was lazy to give them a category:
Here ends this humble effort to help you start in this world. Must say I'm a bit obsolete since I stopped watching new series since 2 - 3 years ago, so maybe there are some animes that could cut it to start.
Also, if you are more experienced or a non-starter, please, avoid starting a war in the replies, this is intended for the new ones, so, if your favorite anime isn't on the list, you can recommend it as well for the newbies. This list is not intended to be a tier-list, good or bad, so I ask you respect.
