I have been hooked to Gintama recently and I am not able to figure out why its not as popular.. I agree its not at Naruto Level...But its definitely better than Bleach XD

it requires some patience , the first few episodes ( ~ 60 ) are just weird (i love them all) and doesn't explain much about where the anime is headed and the story seems weird, it's just random stuff going on, the comedy is gold but that's also subjective, not everyone would enjoy it and since it has a lot of parody, you wouldn't understand the references if you haven't watched those anime (mainly the big titles so not as much of an issue). It also has jokes based on the language puns so there's that.

I remember painfully going through the first 2 episode (which are fillers and better to skip and only come back here later) and not understanding one bit, but later I started to enjoy it and quickly finished watching all of it, even the fillers. It was one of the few anime where I loved fillers as well. Also the starting episodes are animated in old style cuz it is old of course. As much as it is funny, when it comes to being serious , it actually becomes pretty serious and very much enjoyable. Its amazing how it manages to completely switch from being really funny to really serious to really funny again.

With all of this, it might be hard for one to start watching Gintama, but once you are hooked, you just can't stop watching it. It's just too fuking funny. It's easily my favorite of all time and is just too hilarious. The characters are really great and you would love almost all of them. It's clear why this anime dominates MAL. It may not be as popular as other big titles but anyone who has watched it enough would really love it.

My only complain would be that why did it end :/ . Also they should have had some canon romance (Gin x Tsukuyo) in the story.

Here's my perspective on it - only have watched the first 10 episodes or so and got bored. I tried to keep an open mind at first but like z1ne99 said - I'm not really sure where this story is heading and it just seems all over the place. Gintama's type of humour isnt really for me either. I am the type of person who probably likes a bit more hype or action - the quality doesn't really bother me but it can add to the feeling of "old" especially with the type of jokes in it. No hate though, I tried watching it but wasn't for me - maybe I'll try again in the future

It comes off as a parody comedy from the clips I have seen , but people do swear by it. I just haven't had the the patience to sit down and start. I have a small backlog and i am afraid if i start it I'm going to be stuck forever not finishing the ones I started . I want to give it a shot though
