Trying so hard to qualify for my weeb badge but damn it is hard...
Hell's Paradise is one anime that people have been recommending to me but damn if this is one of the good ones, then maybe anime ain't for me. Don't know if there's a genre of this algorithm but basically:
- you generate a character with cool aesthetics;
- exposition;
- 50% they get killed off immediately;
- exposition;
- the ones who survive get to have backstories;
- exposition;
- if you see their backstory, there's another 50% chance they get killed off;
exposition;
Annoying Japanese troupes:
- Main character - dead inside but badass, but also cares about everything, but is a bad boy.
- Side characters - vicious, unapologetic criminals with a moral compass that appears for plot reasons.
- Character designs revolving around a single trait - the creep, the nerd, the hotheaded one, etc.
- Character development - ??? 404
I've seen this storytelling design or similar ones in other animes and the only reason Hell's Paradise beats them is due to the aesthetics and possibly funding. So it's a MAPPA thing but compared to what MAPPA can do (except to drive its employees to suicide) I could even call it trash.
