How do you think society would function if money didn’t exist?

Imagine waking up one day to find that money, in any form, no longer exists. No more cash, no digital currencies, no gold-backed systems, and no substitute like Bitcoin.

How would the world adjust, and what kind of system would replace the concept of exchanging money for goods and services?
Would we revert to barter, with individuals directly exchanging resources, skills, and products?
Or would we develop something entirely new? Consider also the implications for motivation and innovation.

In today's world, financial incentives drive much of the workforce and technological progress: If that disappeared, what would motivate people to work or create?

This sounds like the plot to mr robot lmao. I think they put it in a realistic way though, sounds nice on paper but we'd only end up worse off.

I think it might be possible that people revert to exchanging goods and services. Maybe communities get together and organize a company-like structure.

If the concept of money is not known, people would value goods and services. So people would be motivated to create and work.

Honestly I would be willing to experience anything just to witness this if it ever happens. On Earth, we often think money is essential for survival.

However, if we consider robots colonizing Mars they wouldn’t need money to survive. They could self-repair if something goes wrong and their intelligence would allow them to invent and create effortlessly. For humans that’s not feasible. To thrive without money, one would need to become a robot or AI, no mouths to feed, no need for currency. What’s necessary is a multitude of robots, equipped to maintain and repair themselves.

If money didn't exist and there was no strive to invent it, we would likely go into a bartering system. Capitalism would be dead. This would not only force us to work harder but we would also have to diversify our offerings or ensure we could have a steady source of valued goods in order to barter with the local merchants. Another idea to stay alive without money is joining a community with collective resource management. This way everyone that contributes gets some other necessities in return. We would have to be motivated by some form of recognition in order to promote innovation. But man, a world without money or currency would be a step in the wrong direction for sure.

Quite an interesting thought experiement.

I think if no money existed the world would still be able to function somehow - there's a way for anything to work. The world is limitless, a lot of things are possible, it's just out of our perception so it seems crazy.

However, money suddenly disappearing will cause panic and disorder, people will start rioting, stealing, hoarding, it'll be us the people to ruin everything. People won't be patient or diligent enough to think of how they'll live without money.

They'll also most likely be one ruler for the whole world and people will have to start getting some sort of stamp on their body Big Grin

When money disappears, we'll be trading services like: "I'll wash your dishes if you make me coffee!" and we'll all be rich... in smiles

Luxury items like booze, cigarettes, weed, snack foods would be worth their weight in gold and I'd imagine you could get some choice stuff

almost all industries would be collapsed cuz everything trying to seem flashy nowadays so no one could flex their money and luxury stuff to other people.

It would be a conflicting world, since to barter you would have to have just the product that the seller needs to barter
