How do you think society would function if money didn’t exist?

Money is only a tool. If it didn't exist we would invent it because is much easier than having a barter economy. Rich people would still be rich, only they wouldnt have millions of dollars but they would have land and goods and probably would proclaim themselves emperors or pharaons at some point.

Complete and utter Paradise.

It won't become any better since money is just a gentle form of power.

Money didn't always exist. Before money, societies relied on a system of barter to facilitate trade. During barter economy, people exchanged goods and services directly without a standardized medium of exchange. For example, a farmer traded wheat for tools from a blacksmith, or livestock exchanged for fabric or other necessities.

So hunger would always be a motivational factor to work and make a living.

How would the world adjust, and what kind of system would replace the concept of exchanging money for goods and services?
Would we revert to barter, with individuals directly exchanging resources, skills, and products?
Or would we develop something entirely new? Consider also the implications for motivation and innovation.

In today's world, financial incentives drive much of the workforce and technological progress: If that disappeared, what would motivate people to work or create?

If money didn’t exist, something else would’ve taken its place. The Lydians invented money, but the answer to your question lies in history. Let’s look at the period before the Lydians—people used a barter system. They would either trade what they had or work temporarily for free to receive a product, only paying after the work was done. In addition to bartering, payments were made with things that were needed, like salt, blankets, or even valuables like gold, silver, or crafted items.

To make this easier to understand, let’s do a thought experiment. Imagine this: when you receive money, what do you do with it? You use it to meet your needs, right? So, your work = money = meeting needs. Now, let’s take money out of this equation: your work = meeting your needs. If money didn’t exist, that’s exactly how things would work. Your employer would provide for all your needs at the end of the month.
Not having money would also mean no capitalism, but feudalism would probably take its place, so the world wouldn’t change much. One last example: if you wanted to buy a video game, you’d have to work at the game company for a time equal to the game’s value, or you’d have to trade goods or crops worth the same as the game. I hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask if you have any questions

If you're curious about what the world was like without money, look into the periods before the Lydians. Money was invented during the time of the Lydians

If money didn’t exist, society might function through:
  1. Barter System: People trade goods directly, though it’s inefficient for complex exchanges.
  2. Resource-Based Economy: Resources distributed based on needs, managed by technology.
  3. Reputation Economy: Social credits for work, with reputation impacting access to goods.
  4. Skill Exchange Networks: Individuals trade skills (e.g., healthcare for food).
  5. Communal Sharing: Shared resources in small, close-knit communities.
  6. Automated Economy: Advanced tech provides essentials freely, allowing people to focus on interests.
Motivations could shift from wealth to social standing and community.

I think we'll start trading services or possessions at first, and then everyone will have to come up with something they can trade for other things they might need.
Others will start stealing more.
Friends, family, any of those connections would be critical as these people will trade with you more easily than others.

i love thinking of things like this. reminds me of topics teachers would give us in high school to think about and write an essay on!

idk what would happen in this situation. i am sure as a society we would figure out some way to exchange things. money in some for would probably always exist.

Without ANY concept of money, the world simply cannot function right.
