Protecting onion services against denial of service attacks
One strategy we've developed that makes attacking onion services less attractive is a proof-of-work mechanism that is activated when certain pathological situations occur. With the support of our community, we've successfully hired developers dedicated to enhancing onion service resiliency and have invested significant effort into integrating the proof-of-work mechanism into Tor. In the 0.4.8 release of Tor, the proof-of-work functionality comes to the network as relays upgrade. Your support will help us continue this work.
