Flat our here is the difference.

Darkweb is meant for illegal content, or content that is not permitted on a normal website say extreme hate content inciting violence etc.

DeepWeb is a term that long predated TOR and .onion sites

originally meant for things like say databases that a normal search engine could not index

think of it like Government data searches provided by gov's or companies to

so yes even intranets

.onion sites can be considered both DeepWeb and DarkWeb, it highly depends on the content the site has

For example I can say that the web (hidden wiki) and the like belong to a layer called deep web because they don't usually show more sensitive information than normal.


But sites like drug forums or deeper components where registration levels require some more advanced knowledge, are they considered darkweb?

The key difference is Legal vs illegal, DarkWeb is supposed to mean illegal content, DeepWeb Legal content that search engines cannot index.

Though I admit way too many "Media" sites today confuse the terms themselves, obviously they do not know the origins of the terms either!

DeepWeb is everything that is not indexed in the common search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo and so on and is everything that requires an authentication to access. For example, my mother uses DeepWeb on a daily basis (even she has no idea what a PC is xD) as she access to her bank account, whatsapp, her gmail account and so on.
DarkWeb  is everything that is not indexed in the common search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo AND needs a specific protocol or software to be accessed. Onion sites are , for sure, DarkWeb and in some cases could be considered as DeepWeb as, for example, accessing to exploit.in requeres an authentication (that's why there are a lot of confussion here!) For example, i2p is also considered DarkWeb. 
Then we have the "darknets" which helps us accessing this DarWeb sites like Tor, i2p, Freenet,ZeroNet.
Sorry but, accessing to Twitter though Tor, (using the onion link) means that you are navigating on the darkweb and it does not mean that you are doing something bad
