Where are we at with Intels innovations now? I've had an intel CPU for years and was considering a jump to AMD...

Intel innovations only in the server segment,  in the user segment Intel expects to get more money for old technologies sold as new. AMD is a good choice if you play games.

Personally, I have enough of the old Intel

I think AMD is ahead, Intel it's ok, but nowadays..

I miss the old days where PC building felt far more simple.

My old AMD Phenom Black Editoon was a BEAST of a CPU...

Semi-related, what really pisses me off is the fact that modern custom build cases often come without slots for optical drives. I wanna watch DVD and Blu-ray on my beast home build!

There are a few with optical drive slots, but often the less attractive ones. It is a sad change for the industry.
