We can agree that Telegram is no longer a messaging app offering effective anonymity. Unlike Signal, conversations on Telegram are not automatically end-to-end encrypted. This means Telegram's servers can potentially access standard chats. Telegram also collects metadata, such as phone numbers and login logs. This information could compromise anonymity if it falls into the wrong hands. What do you think?

Yes, that's what I do. But in my country, it’s becoming very complicated. It’s almost impossible to buy a SIM card without a local connection. Even WiFi connections require an OTP sent to a mobile number.

Yes, by the way, it's interesting to read their FAQ. Even the encryption isn't automatic; you have to enable it.

Telegram claims not to store the content of private messages on its servers after they have been delivered. However, it retains connection metadata (such as IP address, connection time, and duration) for a limited time, typically 12 months, for security and abuse prevention purposes. For secret chats (end-to-end encrypted), Telegram guarantees that no content is stored on its servers. However, for regular chats (non-secret), messages are stored on Telegram's servers in an encrypted format. This means there is a certain level of logging, but the exact policies regarding data retention may vary depending on local laws and specific cases.

It's at the point now, where I think the only way to be really secure is not to send the message in the first place. Can't really trust anything.
